We recently introduced a couple new Tiller templates, and as we continue developing templates with our customers and partners the options will continue to expand. We wanted to provide a brief guide to helping you choose a template based on the options we have available so far.

The reality is that you could choose any one of them, play around with it, and if you don’t like it, you can remove it from your Tiller account. That’s the beauty of being able to create multiple Tiller Sheets. There’s no way you can mess up. Your original transaction data is safely backed up and ready to populate the next Tiller Sheet you create.

But, if you need a little more information to help you pick, here’s a rundown.

Tiller Standard Template

We built this one as a way to get started with Tiller. If you’re not a spreadsheet genius or just don’t want to deal with creating your own queries and formulas it’s probably the place you’ll want to start.

The emphasis in this template is categorizing your transactions. Once you do so, and you’ve done this for a few weeks, you’ll get a few basic reports that will help you understand your spending on a week by week basis. It’s great for building awareness about where your money is going.

Raw Data Template

This one’s for our spreadsheet gurus or aspiring spreadsheet gurus (or anyone who wants to experiment). It’s your chance to play around with your data without distractions. There are no reports, formulas, or queries (that means no category logic) in this one. Just unrefined financial transaction data, in a spreadsheet, updated every day.

This template gives you the opportunity to start from scratch and customize your financial spreadsheet just the way you want. Maybe you need a family budget spreadsheet or one to manage your business expenses. Either way, this template makes it possible to craft exactly what you need. Remember, you’re not going to mess anything up, so let loose and play around.

Build Your Own Template

The Build Your Own template for a little help with category and balance logic. The Build Your Own template for a little help with category and balance logic.

The Build Your Own is very similar to the Raw Data template except we give you a little bit of help with the category and balances logic. It’s a starting place if you want to build reports and charts around transaction category data, but don’t feel like creating the category logic yourself. Basically, we’re giving you a head start.

It’s a great option if you want to create some pivot tables, like a monthly spending pivot table, or graphs and charts to show how much you’re spending in each category in a weekly or monthly view. It gives you the power to craft your money management spreadsheet with the ease and flexibility of having your financial transaction data funneled into a spreadsheet for you each day.
